Combining competitive racing, top-rate hospitality and the picturesque scenery of the Bay of Islands, the NZ Millennium Cup will get the South Pacific’s 2020 regatta season off to a fine start.
The event will get underway on 29 January with a practice session and this will be followed by three days of thrilling racing. Two races will be planned for each day, with challenging courses weaving around the emerald waters of the island-chain in response to the varied weather conditions.
Each year, familiar faces return to the race, reflecting the quality and popularity of the regatta. Last year, for example, saw the 28m/92ft sailing yacht TAWERA scoop the title for the third time despite facing stiff competition from other previous winners and experienced racers.
A surge in interest is expected over the next few editions too as New Zealand looks ahead to 2021 when it will host the iconic America’s Cup. Alongside welcoming a bigger racing fleet, organisers also hope to see an increase in spectators, watching from the land as well as from the water.
A key aim of the regatta is to highlight the diversity of New Zealand’s cruising grounds and to present it as a viable superyacht destination. It also hopes to draw attention to the country's refit and repair services.
