Looking for an incredibly capable bluewater boat that was built to the highest of standards? A boat that is so unique that only ONE exists? Then Atlantic, the only Fast Passage 40 ever built, is the one for you! Located just south of Annapolis, she's easy to see and will not disappoint.
Made famous in the 1983 BOC Challenge with Francis Stokes aboard "Moonshine", the Fast Passage 39 - as it was called then - made waves finishing second in its class. After the race, Stokes declared: "I don't believe there is a better all-around sea boat than your Fast Passage." Beth Leonard, a bluewater sailing legend, deems the Fast Passage "a tremendously capable and sea worthy boat". That's some high praise coming from two of the worlds most respected sailors.
This is an incredibly rare boat, with only about 40 of the Fast Passage 39's built between 1975-1985. The hull was designed by the famed boat designer William Garden based on the lines of the lovely wooden ketch "Bolero". Garden was the authority of bluewater boat designs in the 70's and 80's also designing hulls for Formosa, Gulf, Mariner and Vagabond to name a few. In the late 90's Jeremiah Mitchel of Noah Corporation bought the molds for the hull and deck and hired Northern Marine (made famous by their extremely sturdy expedition trawlers) to build the boat. This re-invention of the classic Fast Passage 39 design is Atlantic.
A few modifications were made to the original mold as boatbuilding technology had drastically improved since the mid 80's. Keeping Garden's design, which had been proven as a perfect marriage of performance and seakeeping abilities, the original long full keel was replaced by a low-aspect fin with cutaways fore and aft and a substantial skeg with a giant rudder added beneath the stern. Closed-cell Airex foam was placed above the waterline in the topsides (below the waterline is solid fiberglass) and rigid AirLite foam replaced the heavy balsa core in the deck and hatches. This reduced the overall weight by 500-600 pounds in total. Lay-up is done by hand using vinylester resins and fiberglass which was vacuum bagged, resulting in a uniform void-free laminate with just the right resin-to-fiberglass ratio making it extremely rigid and light. A Duratec barrier coat for added protection against blistering. The entire rig was re-spec'd by Spar Tech and the nearly 60' masthead cutter rig features double spreaders, fore and aft fixed lowers, and a smaller, more efficient section for weight savings aloft. Atlantic is the result of a proven winner that was brought up to modern day standards.
Atlantic's original owner (2000-2010) kept her solely in the Chesapeake Bay and used her lightly. Her second and current owner recognized the bluewater capabilities that the Fast Passage 40 was built for and used her the way she was intended - cruising up and down the East Coast, across the Atlantic to Portugal, back across the ocean to deep in the Caribbean then back up to her starting point here on the Chesapeake. Many times he was sailing solo which he found to be incredibly safe and easy due to the many offshore features of the boat.
