Yachting myths

Yachting is one of the most interesting, informative, gambling and attractive sports that allows a modern person, loaded with an incessant stream of information pouring from all sides, to escape from routine affairs in order to enjoy the wind, sun and salty splashes of water. This is a great way to relax in nature and share a good mood with friends and strangers on the water. It is not surprising that the popularity of yachting is growing from year to year - today it is not only sailing, but also a very popular way in some countries (for example, in Holland or Great Britain) to recharge with positive emotions and feel the real taste of life. However, in our time, the prevailing myths and misconceptions about this type of active recreation are still alive. We will try to consider them and destroy them as much as possible.

  1. Yachting is an elite entertainment available only to a select few. Indeed, initially (and the emergence of yachting is attributed to the middle of the 17th century) only aristocrats rested in this way, but today a significant part of the park of pleasure craft is made up of small yachts owned by people with average incomes. In addition, you can successfully rent a yacht for quite reasonable money, and then you will not will have to deal with issues of registration, parking, vessel maintenance, etc. By a simple comparison of the cost of water recreation and traditional types of recreation, one can understand that yachting is not more expensive, while it significantly surpasses them in terms of the girth of locations and types of activities.

  2. Yachting is a dangerous occupation, and only professional yachtsmen can do it. There is a share of risk in any event - whether it is a trip out of town by car, flying to another country or skiing, paragliding, etc., and yachting is no exception. At the same time, modern yachts are equipped with perfect navigation and monitoring tools, equipped with all the necessary life-saving equipment, and the maritime rescue service is one of the most serious and equipped structures in which trained specialists are employed, and all yachting activities are planned in advance in such a way as to avoid possible weather surprises. Also, to prevent extreme situations when driving in the open sea, you need to follow a number of rules - use only non-slip shoes, wear protective gloves, do not stand on the stern when turning, etc. All this is enough to feel safe at sea. In general, it's up to you to decide, but all the facts show that modern yachting is no more dangerous than driving a car in a metropolis.
  3. Yachting is boring and uncomfortable. But if that were the case, would the richest people in the world start sailing on vacation and not devote their free time to other forms of entertainment? The truth is that today yachting is one of the finest forms of recreation invented by mankind, and cruising sailing yachts have already become a favorite form of recreation for millions of people around the world. While yachting, you can retire from the elements, finding yourself far from noisy megacities, enjoying the fresh wind and clear sea (what can we say about diving, when vivid pictures of the sometimes very bizarre underwater world open before your eyes!). In addition, a yacht trip will surely be remembered for a lifetime with a whole set of vivid impressions and positive emotions. Therefore, in no case can it be said that it can be boring on board a yacht - something is constantly happening here, and for a beginner there are always activities to their liking - whether it is learning navigation or mooring, and tourist routes yachts are always planned in such a way that there is enough time to explore the sights on the shore - every day the boat stops at a new marina, where you can find entertainment for every taste. As for comfort, modern yachts are equipped with all its components - kitchen, shower, hot water, toilets, etc.

  4. Yachting requires special, expensive and inaccessible clothing. The myth is reasonable, since the ship really requires special gloves (so as not to damage the skin of the hands when handling tackle), shoes (so as not to slip on a wet deck) and clothing (waterproof, three-layer, to ensure maximum comfort In any weather). However, the functionality of the clothes is determined by where you are going to walk on the water - in the sea or on the river, as well as the duration of the trip. The basic set for a beginner does not include anything supernatural, and the choice depends on the temperature overboard: in cold weather, all three layers (thermal, fleece and protective) are used, while shorts and a T-shirt are preferred in warm weather.
  5. There is no room for a woman on the yacht. In fact (and experienced yachtsmen confirm this) women occupy a place equal to a man on the ship, sharing with him all the hardships of travel on the water and enjoying the rising sun on the horizon, salty spray and refreshing wind. Also, many of the fair sex today successfully receive a skipper's license in yacht schools, giving preference to such an original vacation, participating in regattas, making round-the-world trips, etc.

  6. A good skipper is hard to find. Possible ways out of this situation may be to search for an experienced skipper among friends, on the Internet, or yacht rental together with the skipper. Moreover, the last option is the most acceptable, because in this case you get a captain with a wise experience along with a proven, technically sound vessel, which he knows inside and out! A good skipper will help you choose the most appropriate route for your trip, teach you the basics of yacht management and will be able to ensure safety during your trip.
