The Bahamian island of Guanahani, designated as San Salvador, was the first landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World. The natives of the island were the Lukayans , whom Columbus described as a peaceful people, handsome and generous. The lack of gold made the Spaniards focus on settlements in other parts of the Caribbean. In 1629, the English Charles I claimed Carolina and abandoned the Bahamas. In 1648, William Sales and his Eleutheran adventurers (eleutheria - freedom) landed briefly in Nassau harbor while searching for a place for a Puritan colony. Then they sailed south to today's Eleuthera island. There, a reef called the Devil's Ridge destroyed the ship of adventurers and chose a new home for them. The survivors were the first English settlers in the Bahamas. The wrecked ships became a source of income for the less religious settlers of the city. If bad weather and bad maps didn’t bring enough salvage to the shore, the “citizens” of this settlement would set fires on reefs to lure the ships to death. Although the distant English government did not approve of this fraudulent activity, it did not mind at the beginning of piracy. In the 17th century, England was constantly at war, and the Royal Navy had its hands occupied, so the sea captains under the name "privateers" were handed a letter with a marking that allowed attacking enemy ships.
Piracy spread, the Republic of the Private was established in Nassau, and Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard, declared himself the Magistrate of Nassau. When England signed treaties with its enemies, privateers (who exceeded the limits of their labeling letter) became illegal. In 1718, the republic came to an end because England sent Governor Woods Rogers to Nassau, armed with three warships - Pirates Expelled — Commerce Restored. The Bahamas then became an English colony, and during the American Revolution many fled here, some brought slaves from plantations in the Carolina. But the plantations did not become a successful way of life on the islands. And in 1807, when the English parliament banned the slave trade, the Royal Navy intercepted many slave ships bound for America, and captured Africans were freed here.
During the American Civil War, England and Nassau challenged the blockade of the North and continued to trade with the southern states. Later, during the Ban, Nassau again challenged the United States and led a vibrant trade in alcohol smuggling to southern ports. In the 1940s, King Edward VIII left his throne for the sake of “the woman I love,” and settled in Nassau. A new couple, known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, began a new era of peaceful glamor, attracting more and more visitors and celebrities to the islands.
